10. Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd – Anthology
11. Strip Poker – Nancy Bartholomew
So, finished off the Sierra Lavotini series. Last book ends by opening up some juicy new plot threads, then I go online and learn that the publisher doesn’t want to continue the series, which is not to say that the author feels the same. If she had her way, she’d definitely continue, which is something, at least. Ugh.
Geektastic is an anthology of nerdy stories for young adults. Twas a Christmas present from one of my very best friends (Luff you!), so it was started in December and finished the other day. I so enjoyed it, and I think there’s a wide enough variety of stories that most any geek would enjoy it too.
I finished this batch a little later than I expected, in part due to the semester starting and me having to get to sleep at a reasonable hour (I do my best reading in the middle of the night), but also largely due to me finishing off watching Red Garden and catching up on Fables. Nothing like anime and comics to recharge after all the paper-cut making prose books. That’s right. Last week I got about six papercuts in two days.
Next on the agenda are the last two Harper Connelly books, but there’s a twist. My web design 2 project is going to be sort of an encyclopedia site for those books, so I expect to be reading and rereading these all semester. Also, the young adult section of my library finally reopened after remodeling, so I’ve picked up a couple of books that I may end up reading first. Who knows.
I’ve also got about a dozen more chapters of Fables and the entirety of Jack of Fables to catch up on, and a few new DVD sets of anime to watch. A Suncoast near us has been having a massive liquidating sale, so everything was 50% or more off.
A series about a competition called the Alice Game in which Rozen Maidens (living dolls) fight against each other to become the perfect girl. They compete with the aid of mediums (who are humans that the dolls were delivered to and who then formed contracts with them). I quite appreciated the art, characters and story generally. The occasional humour is also rather enjoyable. Overall it is one of my favourite series. The manga is fairly different in many ways particularly the later parts of the manga but regardless I found it to be excellent for largely the same reasons. You can read it online here. My favourite character by far is Suigintou.
Chris Brown has been walking around Milan for Spring Fashion week looking really couture, but what happened to the colours Chris? Looks like he took “all black everything” to heart!
It was an interesting choice from the 2009 Autumn series
(funny enough, the 2 most interesting characters aren’t even in this picture)
So, Sora no otoshimono (aka, gift from the sky), was a 12 episode series during 2009 fall season. It’s about aboy Tomoki Sakurai who one days encounters an Angeloid Ikaros (the pink hair one) falling from the sky. She imprints on Tomoki and act as a generic emotionless servant with various abilities. As the series progress, she gets more human like. What turns out is that she is more than the “pet class” originally claimed, and the place she left, what looks to be the heaven, seem to have more plans for her.
It’s a very eccentric series, and can put people off in the very first 2 episodes. If you have a non-human servant who has the ability to grant wishes, and a pervert boy who’s making those wishes (no, this is not porn), you get a series of sometimes offensive, but most of the time hilarious scenarios.
Don’t get me wrong, i like how some of the fantasies come out, it’s just that the boldness and the crudeness of the presentation can bring bad taste in some viewer’s mouth. For example, there’s one which he requested for the time to stop so he can go full naked streak in the town~ I can fully imagine some drunk people who do that, except without the time-stopping part. There’s also a feeling of “what if the time starts moving while he’s streaking?” aspect that kept me intrigued throughout the whole scene. You’ll see what eventuated~
Then it gets better in ep2. It starts out with a flashback of his Grandfather told him during a hunting trip to “shoot down the first one that flies off so the whole group won’t follow suit”, then the whole episode is about how he accidentally saw Sohara Mitsuki’s (the girl in school uniform) underpants and thought it’s too childish. He accidentally made the wish and what happens is the underpants starts to fly off, then it gets better as Ikaros mis-interprets his command and removed all the girl undies from within the 100m radius circle. Then the whole herd of undies just starts to fly in the sky, travelling across the whole world. Absurd comedy don’t usually get better than this, especially when you consider the link back to the flashback. I was laughing my ass off throughout the episode, and literally cannot breathe when the ED changed to a serious country-isk music with the videos of news from all across the world reporting that phenomenon.
ok, enough with the introductions. The comedy is still there throughout the whole series, but as usual it gets serious as the series progress. More characters are introduced, and more we get to understand the place Ikaros fell from. It’s nothing deep, but it does it’s job of keeping the story interesting than just a series of awesome stunts. I still have to say those stunts are pretty much what a harmless perverts would wish for, and the way it’s pushing the boundary is just purely hilarious.
pros:
the jokes, enough said. I rarely cringe, if ever, when watching those set pieces. Those are just awesome.
The visuals. This series is done by AIC, who’s previous famous works consist of Ah! My Goddess, Candy Boy, Bamboo Blade, and Ga-Rei Zero. I don’t think it’s one of the frontline studios at the moment, but the way they handle the visual aspect is quite superb. Most screenshots are so of high quality that it can be turn into desktop backgrounds in no time.
ED. Unlike Bakemonogatari where it changes the OP for the arcs, Sora no Otoshimono have different ED for most of the episodes. It can get from serious and epic, to sad and beautiful, to just absolutely absurd(in a good way). Each serves its purpose of finishing off an episode, and credit to the studio to finding a number of quality good old Japanese songs that fits the episode so well. Most notable mention came I think in ep7 where they choose a slow, soothing, beautiful song that’s just brilliant.
The characters. No, not Tomoki, not Sohara, not even Ikaros. The best characters comes in the form of Eishirō Sugata, a quite, ultra-serious, fascinated about finding that “New World”, living in the bushes, high school inventor/scientist. There’s also Mikako Satsukitane, the student council president who is the heiress of a yakuza family. They both provide calming contrast to the eccentric nature of the other 4 characters and the outrageous situation, and is sometimes what making the comedy so great. Also Mikako is a cunning, manipulative and highly intelligent hottie. Honourable mention goes to Nymph (the blue hair one in the picture) who receive the “best tsundere presentation/balance” award in Komica.
cons
ok, the story is on the bland side. But can’t say it has less story than the likes of Lucky star and Hayate. It’s there to keep the story along and provide more possibilities for the comedy. But if you are watching this series for the storyline you will definitely be disappointed. It’s just too bland, and got cut off when it just starts to get interesting.
the romance. Gosh I hate sappy romance. If only this series takes out parts like “how can i hold master’s hand?” from Ikaros (yes, only Ikaros), it would be so much better. I simply don’t care if Ikaros wants to have Tomoki’s children or not, just stop having those stupid boring scenes please. I blame the director for it, because although it sometimes provide a prerequisite for the comedy sequence, the way they present it is just too sappy for my liking.
Final words:
Would I recommend this series? it depends. If you likes a good comedy, while not taking offence of the character design (I’d read some previews who got put off by the blatant character design) and some of the jokes, I strongly suggest it. There are just too many of unexpected sequences that make me chuckle wtf, but overall it’s great experience. It really depends, really.
There will be more. This series is adapted from a manga from Suu Minazuk which is still ongoing, and at the end of the final episode of this series they put out a character portrait that’s still yet to come. Would I be excited for a 2nd season? I am satisfied by what they put out this season, and yes, would be interested to see how they would go in the 2nd one, though I won’t say I would be ultra excited like I am about the current Durarara! :D
So the rumor has been true… they’re really going to made UBW’s movie!!!

Last September, Funimation released a Fate/stay night anime series box as one of its first anime DVDs from its distribution deal with Geneon Entertainment. Geneon Entertainment had ceased in-house distribution of its own titles in 2007. Tokyopop has been publishing Datto Nishiwaki’s manga version in North America since last October.

Like it tends to be, first episode of Dance in the Vampire Bund didn’t reveal much, while the second one shows us everything. Just that one episode told us already, that the whole thing is going to be about love between Queen of the Vampires and some childhood friend who lost his memory thanks to amnesia. Sounds lame? Well I just started…
Watching the previous episode already left me with the feeling of dissatisfaction and I didn’t expect to find slightest joy in watching the next one, unexpectedly my pessimistic approach was just damn right.
‘Hey, maybe atleast it’ll have opening, filled with poetry and atmosphere boost’, I thought to myself, and the very next second when I played the episode I see a .. Countdown… On Mina’s chest.
My last hope was shattered as I realised that IT WENT ALL THE WAY WRONG, focusing on some form of young girl nudity instead of the problem of vampires itself, it wasn’t really surprising that Opening was just a joke in a very bad taste, I mean, Mina just took of her clothes and started dancing on a construction site. Obviously, every scene was carefully covering her tits, but it wasn’t that shy for long I am afraid…
Once she met her ‘I don’t remember you anymore’ friend, it was just obvious that it’s gonna be LOVEY DOVEY romance, I didn’t expect things to proceed that fast though…
…That he’d protect her life without a doubt! What were you thinking? Oh wait.. You weren’t wrong
‘I’m out of sunscreen, could you give me a hand…?’
Oh come on! He won’t just touch random loli vampire in a dark storage, that would be disturbing.
WHAT?
As we can see, the show isn’t so discreet anymore, topless body of our loli vampire was shown for about 2 minutes of the episode, I don’t know if it was either to convince us that Vampires are shameless or to get audition of people who like to see naked, young Vampires. Probably both. Surprising was the fact that Mina Tepes wasn’t just a shameless, bloodsucking and proud Vampire, but also a cute, crying girl.
A challenger approaches…
A loli Vampire cried…
A pinky promise was remembered…
So it turns out that guy is a werewolf…
Who promised to save loli whenever she cries.
THE END. Wasn’t that just exciting?
As it turned out, that serie doesn’t posses any ‘inner, beautiful meaning’ or atleast ANYTHING orginal. Pinky promises, guy saves the girl thanks to a power-up activated when she cried, plus some mutated vampires. Way to fulfil my low expectations, really.
I finally sat down to watch a bunch of the 2010 anime that I meant to watch. Actually, since I put it off, I got to watch two episodes of a few things. The only one I didn’t sit down to watch yet is Dance in the Vampire Bund. I’m still waiting on a few volumes of manga to come in from Right Stuf and I want to make sure that I’m up to date on the current U.S. releases before I start watching. I’ve heard that so far it’s more of a retelling than an adaptation anyway, but some similar events happen and I don’t want to spoil myself ahead of time. And now that we have explanations out of the way, on to the impressions.
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu – So this is probably the one I’m going to enjoy the most this season. It was great.
The story revolves around a school with a new program. Students are placed into classes A through F with A being the best based on placement exam scores. The A classroom is… well, amazing. It has giant comfy chairs, laptops, self-serve bars with snacks (I’d assume no alcohol <.<), etc. The F room, where our heroes reside… Well, everything is falling apart. It’s also filthy. So what do our heroes do? They take advantage of a policy that lets them challenge other classes to matches in order to switch classrooms (or whatever condition the winner decides instead). They’re goal is to take Class A’s room at all costs.
Challenges occur by using “state-of-the-art technology” to call little mini-versions of themselves into battle with a strength equal to a given student characteristic like their last score in a given subject or their rank in the class. The two do a quick RPG-esque exchange of attacks and the loser is knocked out of the match (and sent to detention to study more).
The battle system is cute and all, but the real draw is in the characters. They’re quite amusing. The series is also home to Hideyoshi. Here’s a picture of Hideyoshi:
Turned on? Good. Hideyoshi’s a guy. Yep. A guy. Most of the internet is gay for him. He may be the best trap since Bridget. Even within the series itself, people are pretty gay for him.
It’s a fun running gag. Actually, it’s not really fair to call Hideyoshi a guy. Hideyoshi is neither a guy nor a girl, but a Hideyoshi. Proof:
Anyway, interesting series with great visuals, decent comedy, a colorful cast, and an excellent trap. Definitely following this one through to the end.
Sora no Woto – A.K.A. K-ON! at wartime.
This one’s a bit interesting. There’s a girl who wants to learn to play music, so naturally, she joins the military. That’s what people do, right?
Actually, in all fairness, it becomes pretty damn apparent after the second episode that this is a post-apocalyptic world of some sort. The unit our heroines are part of is in possession of a tank that no longer functions. This tank is a relic from ages past. It’s called a “zero generation” tank. It’s also a freaking spider tank and we do not have those yet. Their base is also an old school. Episode 2 has an interesting moment where our main character notes that they may be in a music room and the character with her can’t understand why they would teach music outside the army.
Regardless of the setting, it’s a pretty cute series so far. Very lighthearted and a nice, relaxing watch. However, you can’t help but have this feeling that, given the setting of the show and the history of it, shit WILL go down. If that ever happens, we have some potential awesome on our hands. The cast is also great. There’s a good balance of personalities. However, I do feel that not only the art style but the characters themselves are highly reminiscent of K-ON! It’s not really a bad thing, of course. K-ON! had a formula that worked, so it’s good. It’s just a little weird. Oh, and Yuu Kobayashi voices one of the characters <3
Anyway, this one looks like it’ll be a good watch if it keeps the pace up since I’m a sucker for the slice-of-life direction it seems to be going in. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one and I’m hoping for great things.
Durarara!! – First, a picture for the series, since I feel like I have to.
And now, a picture to sum up what I saw.
I seriously have no idea what was going on in most of this. But it was fucking sweet. FUCKING SWEET. Somebody hit someone else with a motorcycle and then SLAMMED THEIR HEAD INTO A WALL WITH IT.
Also, sorry I couldn’t get a widescreen/bigger shot there. Media Player Classic was being stupid and wouldn’t snapshot the frames I was telling it to, so I had to printscreen on my tiny 1086×768 resolution. (I need a new damn monitor.)
Anyway, series revolves around this guy who never left his home town before who is moving to Ikebukuro to go to school after an invitation from his old friend. I don’t really know anything about the series, so basically I just got to meet some characters and get a feel for the setting in the first episode. Also, I got to see the motorcycle thing, which was totally fucking sweet. Did I mention that yet?
I don’t know how I’ll feel about it as it goes on, but right now it’s a definite watch.
Ookamikakushi – This is Ryukishi07’s story with PEACH-PIT’s art thrown into a PSP visual novel and spat back out as an anime.
No one’s really expecting this one to be really good. The PSP VN got a lot of mixed reviews, I hear. The first episode wasn’t terribly interesting, but it did pique my interest.
The story is pretty similar to Higurashi (not a surprise given the same author) and it starts out with a guy moving into a new town and starting school there. There’s a town festival starting soon. Also, people go missing. So yeah, similar. To be a bit more in depth about it, the guy moves in with his dad and his little sister (who, for reasons yet unknown, is confined to a wheelchair). Upon moving in, he meets this weird girl who is extremely clingy in a fairly creepy sense.
This is totally normal behavior around someone you barely know.
So anyway, he goes to school and people seem to love him. He’s pretty average though, and never stood out at his old school. Even a girl who’s pretty new to town herself can’t seem to understand what makes the guy so popular. Well one guy nearly drags him out by the neck to “Science Club.” There’s another weird girl who shows up and doesn’t talk much. She stops him with very few words and everyone kinda pours out of the classroom. Main dude tries to talk to her and she blows him off saying he’s annoying. By this point, I’m having a hard time liking most of the characters. So anyway, creepy stalker chick and new girl and main guy head out to see the town. When they leave school, they see the guy that almost drug main dude out of the room. He panics and runs off. Last we see of him is the guy being chased by a group of costumed/masked people and one of them taking a scythe to him. I should probably mention that at this point he has glowing red eyes and may or may not be a warewolf or something. We don’t really know what happens to him since it takes place off-screen.
So yeah, not a whole lot to say about this one. I guess I’ll have to watch a few more eps (or the whole thing, since I believe it’s only slated to be a 13-episode show) and see where it goes. Watch status is in limbo at the moment.
Chu-Bra!! – Girls’ underwear! Yaaaay! …I think.
I’ll be quite honest. Watching an anime series about middle school girls and their underwear makes me feel really uncomfortable. I feel like I can hear the party van approaching. If nothing else, though, I guess it’s… informative? Educational?
So it’s about this girl (pictured above) that loves underwear. She also likes informing people about underwear. She decides to start an underwear club to teach girls about underwear. (So far after two episodes, we’re not even that far yet.) It’s pretty slow-paced, but it has some decent gags and jokes. It also has some fairly disturbing ones. Two words: Talking. Nipples. (Open link at your own risk. Almost definitely NSFW. Watch the mouse-over preview, too.)
Anyway, weird ass show. Not much to say about it. I didn’t expect much from it to begin with. I pretty much thought it would be complete crap. I’ll give it another episode or two and see where it goes, I guess.
BONUS ROUND
Musou Kakyou: A Summer Day’s Dream – Touhou animu! Fan-made.
This isn’t actually part of the 2010 season in any way, shape, or form. It’s actually a little over a year old. (It was released December 29th, 2008 at Comiket 75.) It’s a fan-made Touhou anime slated for three episodes, but only the first has been made. What’s notable about it is that it uses TOP TIER vocal talent from some incredibly well-known seiyuu. No one knows how MAIKAZE managed to get the funds or connections to make that happen (or if we do, it’s not wide-spread info), but it’s damn impressive. The episode is actually pretty impressive in its own right, too.
The story is that Reimu, our best most favoritist shrine maiden, is setting up for a festival. Her ol’ pal Suika is chillin’ with her. Unfortunately, after she sends Suika out for some shopping, she finds that the shrine’s donation box has been stolen. Aya, who happens to be snooping around, decides that she’ll help out. Calling Marisa out (or more accurately, dragging her there in seconds flat), the three of them head out to find out what’s missing. Checking in at the Scarlet Devil Mansion, we find more of our favorite characters, including Patchouli and Remilia, who have had things stolen from them as well. Nothing really gets resolved in this episode, but we do get a neat and well-done (albeit short) fight scene out of it as well as a few enjoyable moments with the girls.
You can find out more about it here. (PROTIP: If you want to watch it yourself, check the Links section on that page.)
Well, that does it for my little impression thing. I’ll throw some more impressions out for Dance in the Vampire Bund after I get/catch up on the manga for it. Right now, my order is backordered, so I can’t say for sure when that’ll be. I’m also not sure what to expect from me next. I started Demon’s Souls instead of Mirror’s Edge, but it’s a huge undertaking, so I may be bouncing around a few games. Expect either some kind of game review, Katawa Shoujo impressions, or just some random junk that I decide is blog-worthy.
